THETFORD MINES, Quebec, July 1, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (Mégantic-L'Érable), today announced funding for the town of Thetford Mines for its Canada Day activities.
Among the many activities scheduled are a family celebration, an art market, a shuffleboard tournament, a flag-raising ceremony, live performances, and fireworks.
"Celebrate Canada is an opportunity for all Canadians to share the pride they feel for their country," said Minister Moore. "Celebrations like this allow communities to come together and discover the wealth and diversity of Canadian society."
"Canada Day is a time to remember the heritage passed down through the works of our authors, artists and performers," said Minister Paradis. "It is the perfect time to commemorate our history--a history that deserves to be celebrated."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $35,000 through the Celebrate Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program promotes Canadian pride and encourages citizens to take part in Celebrate Canada activities to highlight National Aboriginal Day (June 21), Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24), Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27), and Canada Day (July 1).
