Iqaluit, (Nunavut), July 14, 2010 – Youth across the North’s three territories will benefit from science, engineering, and technology skills workshops this summer thanks to an investment from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. The camps will be delivered by Actua, an organization which provides kids programs designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in the sciences.
The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor).
“This project provides Northern youth with hands-on learning experiences in science and technology,” said Minister Aglukkaq, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health. “Developing our youth today for the skills they will need tomorrow will ensure a strong, skilled northern workforce able to meet the demands of the future.”
"Support from CanNor will significantly expand Actua’s science, engineering and technology outreach initiatives for Northern youth. Our programs build scientific and technical literacy while connecting Northern youth to the many exciting career opportunities that are opening up to them through Northern development,” said Jennifer Flanagan, Actua President and CEO. “By inspiring youth to imagine bright futures for themselves, we are contributing significantly to continuing economic prosperity in the North.”
This investment of $600,000 over three years will be delivered through Actua and their programs will reach an estimated 9000 youth over the next three years across the North.
The investment for this project was made possible through CanNor’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor, which is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
