COBALT, ONT. - A representative of the Canadian Navy will present a framed pictorial history of Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Cobalt to its namesake at Major Holland V.C. Memorial Park (across from the Legion) on Saturday, July 31st at 4:00 p.m.
Commander Steven Waddell, former Commanding Officer of HMC Ships Fredericton and Charlottetown, will make the presentation. Cdr Waddell is a native of northern Ontario, having grown up in the town of Temogami. During this time, he attended high school with classmates from Cobalt and surrounding communities.
Commemorating HMCS Cobalt, the presentation will include a framed picture of the ship that also includes the ship's badge and a historical write-up.
Immediately following the presentation, Cdr Waddell will talk about HMCS Fredericton's six-month deployment with NATO fleet off the east coast of Africa. Fredericton's mandate was to prevent and deter piracy, while contributing to the maritime security of the region. This presentation will be made at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 44, 38 Silver Street, Cobalt, beginning around 1630.
HMCS Cobalt was commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy on 25 November 1940. Among their many accomplishments, the crew of HMCS Cobalt extinguished a fire on board a gasoline carrying tanker in August 1943. After the war, the corvette was converted and used as a merchant ship until 1961.
Similar presentations are being made across Canada, to bring attention to the Canadian Naval Centennial and highlight the connection the Navy has with communities large and small in every corner of the country. Since 1910 Canada has put over 850 warships to sea under the naval ensign. Over 300 ships have been named for communities from coast to coast to coast.
