Montreal, Quebec - On February 23, 2010, at the Salaberry de Valleyfield courthouse, 3681611 Canada Inc. , operating under the name Viandes Valleyfield, pleaded guilty to a charge of violating the Meat Inspection Act and Regulations.
The Court of Quebec fined the company $2,000.
3681611 Canada Inc. , operates Establishment 431 under the federal Meat Inspection Act and was found to have used an electrical prod on an animal in violation of subsection 62(2) of the Meat Inspection Regulations, 1990 on October 2, 2007.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal statutes, including the Meat Inspection Act and Regulations . Under this legislation, handling food animals in a manner that subjects them to avoidable stress or avoidable pain is prohibited. Registered establishments must also comply with requirements for the unloading, holding and movement of animals in slaughterhouses.
