The Aldergrove Community League is moving forward with the redevelopment of its playground thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Our Government’s investment in this project will create immediate employment opportunities and greatly improve an important local playground where students and families can have fun while being physically active,” said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Member of Parliament for Edmonton – Spruce Grove, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
Federal funding is directed towards replacing existing playground equipment with more modern structures, as well as installing swings and a climbing feature. Park furniture such as a covered shelter, benches, picnic tables and waste receptacles are also being added to the site. The completed project will not only increase the space’s capacity to serve the community’s recreational needs, but it is also expected to spur increased interest in physical activities amongst students of Aldergrove Elementary School and local families.
"This investment through the Neighbourhood Park Development Program is one way the City of Edmonton works with our partners to make neighbourhoods more people-friendly, and helps create spaces where people can actively play and connect with each other," said Lyall Brenneis, acting General Manager, Asset Management and Public Works.
Federal funding of $75,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The City of Edmonton also contributed $159,000 towards the project costs.
“This project will benefit so many children and families in our neighbourhood and we are extremely grateful for the funding we received that allows this redevelopment to take place. Through this project we’re ensuring that the next generation will get to enjoy this beautiful playground that is so vital to our community,” said Rhonda, Klakowich, Playground Committee Chairperson, on behalf of the Aldergrove Playground Redevelopment Committee.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global downturn while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
