The King Edward Park Community League is moving forward with repairs and upgrades to the park’s outdoor skating rink thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government is pleased to support this project that will provide economic stimulus while encouraging healthy lifestyles and outdoor physical activity,” said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Member of Parliament for Edmonton – Spruce Grove, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
This initiative includes replacing the existing boards of the skating rink with new pressure-treated wood as well as installing a new chain-link fence. Once repaired, this outdoor facility will continue to serve as a magnet for community activities, including ice skating and hockey, as well as other off-season pursuits.
Federal funding of $13,500 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
"King Edward Park appreciates the funding we've received from the RInC program,” said Scott Wylie, Community Rink Coordinator, King Edward Park Community Association. “We've needed to update the skating rink for quite some time and these funds are making it possible. With the revitalization of the rink we will be able to have a skating program in the winter and a dog off leash area in the summer with much better facilities.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global downturn while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
