Site associated with religious tolerance in the Maritime provinces receives funding
Moncton, New Brunswick, August 3, 2010--Parks Canada today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in the preservation and protection of the Free Meeting House National Historic Site of Canada. Located in Moncton, New Brunswick, the building was dedicated as a house of worship in 1821 and was intended for use by all denominations and accommodated numerous congregations including Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish, until 1963.
Through Parks Canada's Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will contribute up to $4,137 to support the preparation of a management plan for the Free Meeting House National Historic Site of Canada, located in downtown Moncton, New Brunswick. The plan will contribute to the preservation of the Free Meeting House's heritage value and will guide ongoing work on the site.
"Government of Canada places as a priority, the need to support, maintain and improve the commemorative integrity of the national historic sites of Canada," said Mr. Alan Latourelle, CEO of the Parks Canada Agency. "This funding, provided through the Parks Canada Cost-Sharing Program, will contribute to the preservation and protection of the Free Meeting House National Historic Site's heritage values."
"The City of Moncton is proud of this excellent collaboration with Parks Canada. These essential funds will not only allow us to develop the initial conservation plans needed to ensure the best possible preservation work for this important national historic site, but will also ensure our residents and visitors can enjoy the site for years to come," said His Worship George LeBlanc, Mayor of Moncton.
Parks Canada's Cost-Sharing Program is a contribution program that can pay up to 50% of eligible costs incurred by the owner to conserve a national historic site and present its significance to Canadians for their enjoyment and appreciation. With a budget of $20 million provided in part by Canada's Economic Action Plan, the program reflects the government's desire to support job creation by providing funding for conservation of national historic sites.
