Residents of the Saint-Léonard area received good news today as the federal government announced funding of more than $197,000 towards improvements to Club Skirakdoo, the local cross country ski club.
“Our Government is taking steps to stimulate the economy, create jobs in rural New Brunswick and support communities hit hardest by the recent global economic downturn”, said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our investment through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) will allow Saint-Léonard and Club Skirakdoo to create employment opportunities while offering an upgraded sporting and community venue for residents and visitors in the region.”
The Town of Saint-Léonard, in conjunction with Club Skirakdoo, is making improvements to the existing infrastructure of the facility. The Skirakdoo cross-country ski facility has been in existence since 1972. This project involves improvements to cross country ski trails, repairs to the existing chalet, construction of a storage garage and the installation of rest areas located along the trail system.
“The Town of Saint-Léonard is pleased to learn that funding from ACOA has been provided to Club Skirakdoo of Saint- Léonard,” said Carmel St-Amand, Mayor of Saint- Léonard. “Even though the Club is located beyond the town limits, we have sponsored the project and we are confident that our citizens will take advantage of the recreational services that will be offered at that site.”
The Government of Canada is contributing $197,230 in the project through the CAF program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $1 billion over two years for the CAF program which is delivered in Atlantic Canada by ACOA.
Minister Ashfield is currently in northern New Brunswick as part of a four day working visit to the region to highlight companies who are investing in research and innovation to enhance their competitiveness and help grow the New Brunswick and Atlantic Canadian economy.
