QUÉBEC CITY, August 26, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), Sylvie Boucher, Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women and Member of Parliament (Beauport-Limoilou), today confirmed the Government of Canada's contribution to Tennis Canada in support of the 2010 Bell Challenge. The tournament runs from September 11 to 19 in Québec City.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support this tennis event, which will once again showcase our elite female players," said Ms. Boucher. "This tournament provides participants and spectators alike with an outstanding opportunity to enjoy the highest level of tennis competition. I invite you to come cheer on these elite athletes as they strive for excellence."

Downey, President and Chief Executive Officer, Tennis Canada. "Players from around the world have often applauded this wonderful event for its amenities, welcoming fan base, and local support. The Government of Canada has ensured that the Bell Challenge will continue to be enjoyed by the world's best female tennis players and their fans within Quebec."
The Bell Challenge began in 1993 and has matured into one of the most prestigious tennis events in Canada. It represents the country's most important women's international indoor tennis event.
The Government of Canada believes that participation in sport is part of a healthy lifestyle and contributes to a healthy society. Hosting international sport events also gives Canada the opportunity to showcase our country to athletes and spectators from all over the world.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to the 2010 Bell Challenge through Sport Canada's Hosting Program.
