ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, AUGUST 2, 2010—Today the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour, attended the 52nd Annual General Meeting of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities, and met with members of the Association’s Board of Directors to discuss health and safety in Canadian ports and cooperative labour-management relations.
“As Canada recovers from the global economic crisis, we must continue finding ways to prevent injury and illness in the workplace and to foster good labour-management relations,” said Minister Raitt. “When Canadian ports are functioning well, the entire economy prospers.”
Minister Raitt held a discussion with the senior management of ports across Canada during the Annual General Meeting. During the consultations, the Minister highlighted the need for a dialogue on increasing education and awareness of occupational health and safety standards at ports across Canada. The Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring that Canadian workplaces remain fair, safe, productive and cooperative environments that contribute to Canada’s prosperity and the well-being of workers and their families.
