ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRABOR, AUGUST 3, 2010-The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour, returned to Ottawa today after continuing her cross-Canada consultations with key stakeholders, buisness leaders and government officials in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
"To further Canada's economic recovery and future prosperity, our government is commited to improving occupational health and safety and good labour-management relations-a key to our country's success," said Minister Raitt. "We are committed to working closely with our partners to better understand Canadian workplaces and make improvements where needed."
During her visit to St. John's, Minister Raitt delivered opening remarks at the Association of Canadian Port Authorities 52nd Annual General Meeting and Conference, and led a roundtable with members of the Association's Board of Directors to discuss health and safety and cooperative labour-management relations in Canadian ports. The Minister also met with representatives from the St. John's International Airport Authority.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards, and the Employment Equity Act. These laws cover federally regulated workers and employers, which includes those in ports.
