Calgary, August 5, 2010 –The Joint Panel established to review the Joslyn North Mine Project determined on June 25, 2010, following its review of the Application, that it would proceed to public hearing. Following a request to adjourn the hearing to a later date, the Panel considered comments from interested parties on the request. Based on the comments received as well as scheduling difficulties, the Panel has decided that the hearing will proceed as scheduled. The Panel has however revised the schedule relating to submissions on species at risk.
The joint hearing of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) Application No. 1445535 will commence on September 21, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre, 530 MacKenzie Boulevard in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

About the Project
The Joslyn North Mine project proposed by Total E&P Canada Ltd. includes the construction, operation, and reclamation of an oil sands surface mine and bitumen extraction facilities located approximately 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray on Oil Sands Leases. The proposed development includes an open pit, truck and shovel mine; an ore handling facility; bitumen extraction facilities; tailings processing facilities; support infrastructure; water and tailings management plans; and an integrated reclamation plan. The Joslyn North Mine project is designed to produce 15,900 cubic metres per day (100,000 barrels per day) of bitumen.

About the Joint Review Panel
The Joint Review Panel for the Joslyn North Mine project is an independent body, mandated by the Minister of the Environment and the Chairman of the Energy Resources Conservation Board to assess the environmental effects of the proposed project and review the Application. The Joint Review Panel members will consider the Application in a quasi-judicial hearing, sitting as a division of the Energy Resources Conservation Board appointed to make decisions on the Application. The Joint Review Panel members are also appointed as a review panel under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, and will provide a report to the Minister and responsible authorities on the environmental assessment of the proposed project, including any recommendations the Joint Review Panel decides are appropriate.
