Local residents and visitors can look forward to a more energy efficient Salmo Valley Youth & Community Centre thanks to a $34,000 investment from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Multi-use facilities such as the one in Salmo are extremely important to rural communities and to the health and well-being of families, youth and seniors,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board, Minister for the Asia Pacific Gateway and Member of Parliament for Okanagan - Coquihalla, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
With this investment, the Salmo Valley Youth & Community Centre Society will retrofit the facility with new radiators, temperature controls and natural gas boilers. Funding will also help complete washroom and roof repairs. The historic 60-year old building houses a fitness centre, gymnasium and indoor skate park.
“This funding will go a long way towards ensuring the long term sustainability of the facility,” said Laurie Mac Donald, Administrative Coordinator of the Salmo Valley Youth and Community Centre. “We are now able to improve the usability of the space and therefore continue to run very valuable programs in the Salmo Valley.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, WD has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global downturn while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
