New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
The Government of Canada today celebrated the completion of a downtown revitalization project in the community of New Glasgow.
“Our Government’s investment of $2.25 million in the revitalization of downtown New Glasgow strengthens and diversifies the economic heart of this great community,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Member of Parliament for Central Nova and Minister of National Defence. “This revitalization creates significant economic spin-offs for New Glasgow and enhances tourism opportunities in our community for years to come.”
The revitalization project which began in 2007, built on the existing assets of the community’s downtown core. The project has focused on the beautification of most public spaces and also involved the creation of a master development plan, a downtown façade improvement program, the construction of a walking bridge, as well as expansion to the downtown marina. The project’s goal was to revitalize the uniqueness of the downtown core with particular attention to the visual appeal of its heritage buildings, its financial and business district, and the riverfront.
The Town of New Glasgow also invested an additional $560,000 in this important project.
"The revitalization of our downtown area has improved the quality of life and experience for New Glasgow residents, businesses and visitors," said Barrie MacMillan, Mayor of the Town of New Glasgow. "This project is encouraging economic activity and has enhanced the Downtown as the place where our community gathers."
Since February 2010, the Government of Canada, through ACOA, has invested nearly $316 million in communities across Nova Scotia.
