Conche, Newfoundland and Labrador
CONCHE (NL) – September 24, 2010 – The Government of Canada through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) will assist the French Shore Historical Society (FSHS) Inc. with an investment of more than $25,000 to develop a five year business and marketing plan to help the organization continue to further its goals for the region.
The announcement was made today by The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.
"Our government understands the value of investing in our cultural and tourism industries," said Minister Ashfield. "By helping to preserve the French heritage of this region of Newfoundland and Labrador, we are honouring Canada's two founding nations while also supporting the development of a cultural tourism industry that has important economic benefits for the people living in the area."
The FSHS will use the funding to develop its interpretive programs and increase tourism programs within the areas that make up the French Shore of Newfoundland and Labrador, including the communities of Main Brook, Grandois- St.Julien's, Croque, and Conche.
"We plan to implement a viable model for operations to ensure a sustainable future for the organization. We want to showcase the French Shore region to the international arts and tourism community," said Joan Simmonds, project manager of FSHS. "This funding from ACOA will help us with our initiatives and support our goal of recognition on a provincial, national and international level."
The French Shore Historical Society is a registered non- profit organization founded in 2000. It is managed by a voluntary board of directors and local committees in each of the four communities it represents. The FSHS originated to help address economic decline in the area. It builds skills in community development and builds local capacity in heritage related industries.
Funding for the FSHS is being provided under the Agency's Business Development Program.
