Advocate Harbour, NS – Scott Armstrong, Member of Parliament for Cumberland Colchester, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), announced today funding of $1.2 million for Canaqua Seafoods Ltd. through DFO’s Aquaculture Innovation and Market Access Program (AIMAP). This funding will support a project to optimize land-based tank farming of Atlantic Halibut.
“Our government is committed to enhancing the global competitiveness, productivity and environmental performance of Canada’s aquaculture industry,” said Minister Shea. “The $1.2 million we are investing today will go towards a project with commercial applications that will continue to make the Canadian Aquaculture industry the thriving industry Canadians can be proud of.”
AIMAP funding helps recipients plan, manage and complete aquaculture projects to enhance the productivity, economic viability, environmental performance and potential of the Canadian aquaculture industry.
“Our government supports the development of a vibrant and sustainable Canadian aquaculture industry that contributes to the economies of rural and coastal communities,” said MP Armstrong. “Canaqua Seafoods Ltd.’s Atlantic Halibut operation demonstrates how the aquaculture industry is diversifying and heading in exciting new directions.”
In addition to the funds being announced today, $14.7 million of AIMAP funding has been made available throughout Canada over the past three years to fund innovative aquaculture projects that contribute to the industry’s growth, through sustainable production, increased diversification and/or green technology.
