Governments Celebrate New Public Works Facility in Asphodel-Norwood
News Release
Asphodel-Norwood, Ontario, September 7, 2010 – A new modern and energy-efficient public works facility in Asphodel-Norwood will house municipal staff, vehicles, and equipment in one location while reducing power demands and operating costs for the township.
On hand to mark the grand opening of this new facility were: Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough; Jeff Leal, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough; and Douglas Pearcy, Reeve of the Township of Asphodel-Norwood.
”This new public works facility is important infrastructure that will help the municipality provide essential services to local residents,” said MP Del Mastro on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “By centralizing services and equipment under one roof, this project has created local jobs and ensures that Asphodel-Norwood will continue to benefit from top-notch municipal services.”
“Our government’s Open Ontario plan is creating stronger, more successful communities through key investments in local infrastructure projects,” said MPP Leal. “This new public works facility will ensure that municipal operations run safely and efficiently here in the Township of Asphodel-Norwood.”
“Thanks to support from the federal and provincial governments, the Township of Asphodel-Norwood has a modern, green new building it can base its operations out of,” said Reeve Pearcy. “This will help us streamline services and improve the quality of life for residents in the area.”
This new facility includes municipal offices, training facilities, a wash bay, a sand and salt storage building, and a consolidated fuel filling operation. It also features a retention pond that will ensure proper storm-water management.
The governments of Canada and Ontario each contributed $576,667 toward this project through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund program. The Township of Asphodel-Norwood contributed the balance of the total eligible project cost of $1,730,000.
As part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is providing funding to close to 4,000 infrastructure projects across the country and has created more than 400,000 jobs.
The contribution from the Province of Ontario comes from its 2009 provincial budget that is supporting more than 300,000 jobs and strengthening Ontario's economy.
Since 2007, the governments of Canada and Ontario have committed more than $13 billion in funding to over 6,400 infrastructure projects across the province.
