SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, SEPTEMBER 15, 2010—The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour, today renewed the Canada-Brazil Memorandum of Understanding on Labour Cooperation. It allows the parties to learn about each other’s legislation, services and programs for workers and employers, compare best practices and share lessons learned with other countries in the hemisphere.
“Our government is working with Brazil to help achieve greater levels of international cooperation on labour issues,” said Minister Raitt. “The increased ties that will be achieved through this initiative will further strengthen our economic relationship.”
“We consider the strengthening of bilateral relations between Brazil and Canada to be very important. The MOU is a key instrument for the exchange of experiences and for the improvement of our bilateral relations. Through dialogue, we can deepen the knowledge of the realities of each other’s countries,” said Carlos Lupi, Minister of Labour and Employment of Brazil.
The Government of Canada, through the Labour Program, manages Canada’s international labour affairs and represents the country in international discussion of matters such as the elimination of forced labour and child labour, workplace health and safety, industrial relations and employment standards. The Labour Program also negotiates and implements labour cooperation agreements with Canada’s free trade partners and represents Canadian interests in multilateral organizations dealing with labour issues, including the International Labour Organization.
