On September 25, 2010, the RCMP received information of unknown reliability that a person had boarded a Pakistani International Airlines flight in Toronto, bound for Karachi, and may have been in possession of explosives.
The flight had already left Toronto and was beyond Canadian airspace when the pilot was advised of this information. The pilot subsequently made a decision to land in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Swedish National Police (SNP) conducted an investigation and determined the aircraft was not at risk, and it was released to depart Stockholm at 1700 hours local time.
The RCMP takes all information about threats seriously. We try to ascertain the credibility and reliability of information, but in the interest of public safety we needed to take action before we could establish the credibility of the threat.
The safety and security of the public remains our number one priority.
The investigation is ongoing and if the information is deemed to be a hoax, the person who passed along that information can be charged for public mischief.
