Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of former Senator Norman Atkins:
"On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Senator Norman Atkins.
"A legendary political organizer for numerous provincial and federal elections since the 1950s – including the Ontario and national Progressive Conservative parties – Mr. Atkins was also a respected senator with a profound commitment to the country he served and loved. In 2007, he was elected vice-chairman of the Senate's National Security and Defence Committee.
"His devotion to tolerance, moderation and meeting local community needs will be remembered and deeply missed."
