Ottawa, Ontario (October 18, 2010) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the start of work on a wastewater treatment facility and road upgrades in Manawan First Nation, Quebec.
“Not only will these two projects improve important community infrastructure for Manawan, they will also stimulate economic development in the community,” said Minister Duncan. “By investing in infrastructure, we are building stronger First Nation communities while substantially improving the health and safety of residents.”
The renovations underway for the wastewater treatment facilities will improve the system and increase its capacity, ensuring that the system will help to meet the needs of the community's growing population for the next 25 years.
“These investments will serve the people of this community as well as the next generation,” said the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources.
The road upgrades will completely reconstruct 1.4 kilometres of road, improving drainage in areas where runoff mains are to be installed. This work will make it safer for pedestrians, especially students walking near the community's primary and secondary schools.
“We are really pleased with this work” noted Atikamekw de Manawan Chief Paul-Émile Ottawa. “The paving of the roads and sidewalk construction in the areas surrounding the schools were very important to the safety of our children, and the improvement of our wastewater treatment system is a significant step in the modernization of our infrastructure in this rapidly growing community.”
These projects are being delivered through a $1.6-million investment under the First Nation Infrastructure Fund (FNIF), as well as $1.5 million from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada's regular capital funds. Since 2007, more than $94 million has been committed for 264 infrastructure projects across the country.
The First Nation Infrastructure Fund was created to improve the environment and quality of life for residents of First Nation communities by building and upgrading public infrastructure. Through the FNIF, the Government of Canada is building productive partnerships that help First Nation communities become safer, healthier and more viable.
The Manawan First Nation is located in Quebec's Lanaudière region and has a population of 2,133.
