Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, provided congratulatory remarks at the 2010 Gairdner International Vaccine Symposium, an event that brought together the brightest minds from across Canada, the United States, and Asia.
“Our Government believes science, technology and innovation are vital to stimulating productivity, competitiveness and growth,” said Minister Yelich. “Our support for VIDO-INTERVAC will help create jobs of the future and will foster innovation and world-leading research.”
The Gairdner International Vaccine Symposium is co-hosted by the Gairdner Foundation and the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO). The symposium drew together an international cadre of medical scientists to explore the linkages between animal infections and human disease.
The Government of Canada is committed to creating opportunities for scientists to conduct ground-breaking research in the life science sector here in Saskatoon with investments to VIDO-InterVac, the Canadian Light Source, the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), and the University of Saskatchewan’s Toxicology Centre, among others.
Opportunities are also being created all across the West. In Manitoba, WD is working with the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, providing pivotal support that will result in Winnipeg’s advancement as a global leader in neurosciences research, surgical innovation, and advanced medical device development.
In British Columbia, WD is working with Tri-University Meson Facility, known as TRIUMF, to support essential infrastructure and the acquisition of equipment for innovative medical and pharmaceutical research. In Alberta, WD has worked with the University of Calgary on projects such as the Bose Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Product Development Centre, to take research to the next level by combining specialized industry expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure to focus on innovation and product development.
The Government of Canada’s investments support Canada’s technology and knowledge infrastructure, attract more highly-skilled researchers to the community, and accelerate the development of new innovations.
Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and represents the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
