REGINA, Oct. 19, 2010 — Less than a year after the launch of the Mountie House Project and a few weeks short of the November 1 anniversary, the Depot community has fulfilled its pledge to raise the $100,000 needed to start the build.
In fact, the tally sits at over $130,000 and is growing daily. Thanks to imaginative “fun raising” events—and thanks to the generous support of the Regina community and the project’s many partners, including Affinity Credit Union—the sod is about to be turned on a lot located on Rae Street in North Central Regina. Giselle, the recipient of the house, and children Jeremy and Adia will soon have a house to call their home. She will dedicate 500 hours of her own time to see the project through.
“We have the funds, now the fun begins,” says Assistant Commissioner Roger L. Brown, Commanding Officer of “Depot” Division, and it’s just the beginning according to the Division’s top man. “This is an initiative that will keep on giving to the recipients, to Depot cadets and employees, to the Force, and more importantly, to the community.”
Habitat for Humanity Regina, “Depot’ Division’s partner in this venture, could not agree more. “Not only are we building a house here in Regina for a deserving family, but we are also launching this as a national program that will reach right across the country,” says CEO Dennis Coutts. “There is no better work that can be done and no better partner to do the work with.”
In November 2009, RCMP “Depot” Division and Habitat for Humanity Regina entered into an extraordinary partnership to build Mountie House, an affordable house for a deserving family. The project kicked off the official celebrations leading up to Depot’s 125th anniversary.
The first and only other RCMP-sponsored Mountie House was built in Ottawa in 2005 and remains a tangible symbol of what can be accomplished through partnership, cooperation and shared responsibility. For more information about Mountie House or to make a donation, visit www.mountiehouse.ca.
