L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, November 26, 2010 – Acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, Bernard Généreux, Member of Parliament for Montmagny–L'Islet–Kamouraska–Rivière-du-Loup, today joined Jean D'Amour, Member of the National Assembly for Rivière-du-Loup, acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in announcing that the Municipality of L'Isle-Verte will receive an additional $589,442 in joint government financial assistance to rebuild its water supply and combined sewer systems and install a storm sewer system in the western sector of the agglomeration. This latest assistance brings to $2,636,834 the total amount of combined government funding granted to the project through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
Completion of this infrastructure project will necessitate an overall eligible investment of $3,955,249 under component 1 of the MRIF. The governments of Quebec and Canada will now each contribute $1,318,417 toward the work, for a total of $2,636,834 in government funding, with the Municipality of L'Isle-Verte itself investing the remaining $1,318,415 of the project's costs.
The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund was a cost-sharing initiative of the Government of Quebec and Government of Canada through which $470 million in funding was made available to Quebec municipalities. With the financial participation of these municipalities, this initiative resulted in the execution of more than $700 million in infrastructure work. The MRIF was designed to improve community infrastructure, the environment and citizens' quality of life as well as to promote long-term economic growth.
The MRIF comes under the responsibility of the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, with Canada Economic Development delivering the federal portion of the program on behalf of the Government of Canada.
