Iqaluit, Nunavut (November 10, 2010) – Showing its continued commitment to Nunavut and the North, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency revealed the location of its permanent headquarters in Iqaluit.
The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women and the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), today announced that the permanent CanNor headquarters and regional offices will be located in Inuksugait Plaza Four in Iqaluit.
“In its first year of operations, CanNor has made significant progress in enabling Northerners to actively participate in and develop their economy,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “With this permanent base in the North, CanNor will be well positioned to foster economic development, work with its Northern partners, and to advocate for Northern interests.”
"The new permanent headquarters in Inuksugait Plaza Four was determined through a fair and open competitive process, and it is at this location that CanNor’s employees will work to ensure Northern economy is even stronger and more vibrant," said Minister Ambrose.
“By choosing this location, this Government is making good on its promise to have CanNor’s headquarters located in Iqaluit,” said Minister Duncan, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. “Our Government is committed to creating a sustainable and dynamic Northern economy, and this new headquarters will support CanNor in delivering on its mandate to help create a strong and prosperous North.”
CanNor will occupy the first and second floors of Inuksugait Plaza Four. The ground floor will house regional staff, and the second floor will be for headquarters personnel. The office accommodations are expected to be ready for occupants by late 2011.
CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
