On September 10, 2010 New Millennium Capital Corporation (the proponent) notified the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) of modifications to the Direct Shipping Ore Project 1A. Namely, the re-establishment of a rail line crossing the Quebec-Labrador border and the explosives factory are not being pursued by the proponent as part of this project.
After reviewing the proposed changes to the project, Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Transportation Agency confirmed that it no longer required their authorization to proceed. As a result, there is no further requirement for an environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Therefore, the Agency is terminating the environmental assessment of this project.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will continue with the provincial environmental assessment process of the project in accordance with the requirements of the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Protection Act.
