WOODSTOCK, ONTARIO - Today marked the inauguration of the Village of Oxford Gardens Retirement Community's commercial solar-cooling and thermal heating project. Dave MacKenzie, Member of Parliament for Oxford and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety, highlighted the Government of Canada's contribution of approximately $143,000 from ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat.
"This project is a shining example of the contribution of our Government's ecoENERGY initiatives," said Mr. MacKenzie. "We are working to ensure that clean power forms an increasingly important part of our future energy mix."
This project consists of 162 solar collectors on the roof of the retirement home. The collectors absorb the light from the sun and transfer it to a liquid that will power heating and cooling operations in the complex. This technology will make a significant contribution to Oxford Gardens' heating and cooling needs, including domestic water, pool, space heating and running the absorption chiller.
"With support from ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat, we will be able to meet approximately 40 percent of the building's air conditioning load, in addition to a large contribution to the domestic hot water heating, pool heating and space heating, with energy from the solar-cooling system," said Bill VanHaeren, co-owner of the Oxford Gardens retirement home.
The $36-million ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat initiative is one of a series of $4.1-billion ecoENERGY initiatives funded by the Government of Canada to increase Canada's supply of clean, renewable energy.
