Pictou County will benefit from two community development projects thanks to support from the Government of Canada.
“Our government is investing over $65,000 into two community development projects in Pictou County,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our government is committed to strengthening communities through economic development initiatives such as these, building on the assets that exist here to create a stronger future.”
The Merigomish and Area Recreation and Social Association (MARSA) is receiving $20,420 to engage a consultant to identify opportunities for a multi-purpose centre. The project includes designing a layout for the centre, estimating restoration costs and the feasibility to maintain and operate the facility. The consultant will also study the potential construction of an eco-centre.
“MARSA has been working diligently in the community, building social networks and capacity to develop an extensive project: The renovation, refurbishment and "GREEN"ing of the old Merigomish school house,” said Peter Ratcliffe, President of MARSRA. “Located on the shores of Merigomish Harbour, this once vibrant community building will be the subject of a consultation process that will determine what actions become priorities in eco- living, eco-commerce, and tourism opportunities for the area. The value of this project to the greater community is limitless.”
The Pictou Regional Development Agency (PRDA) is receiving $45,000 to support phase two of the skills recruitment and retention initiative. In collaboration with key local businesses and groups, the PRDA is working to improve the recruitment and retention of skilled employees within Pictou County to address the significant skill loss being experienced as a result of retirements and relocations. This second phase of the three-year initiative will include marketing activities to promote the area to potential workers.
“The continued support from the Government of Canada will allow us to undertake a series of initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining skilled youth for businesses within Pictou County,” said Murray Hill, Board Chairperson, Pictou Regional Development Agency.
In addition to the Government of Canada’s contribution, Nova Scotia Economic and Rural Development is investing $42,000 in the two projects.
"The province continues to make life better for families in every region through sustainable investments in community- led initiatives," said MLA Clarrie MacKinnon, on behalf of Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris. "These projects will benefit residents of Merigomish and Pictou County for years to come."
Both federal investments are being made through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund. Since February 2006, the Government of Canada, through ACOA, has invested more than $320 million in Nova Scotia.
