Lincoln, Ontario, November 9, 2010 - The Community of Beamsville within the Town of Lincoln is one step closer to having a new arena and library complex that will serve the whole Niagara region. Dean Allison, Member of Parliament for Niagara West-Glanbrook and Bill Hodgson, Mayor of the Town of Lincoln, today announced a joint funding commitment of federal and municipal support for the arena and library complex project.
This project involves the construction of a new, 46,000 square foot arena and library complex to replace the existing Beamsville Centennial Arena and Fleming Public Library. The new building would also house meeting rooms for community services programming. The expected construction completion date is April 2014.
"The Government of Canada is proud to invest in projects that will create jobs, support local economies and help improve the quality of life for residents in the region," said MP Allison, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "A new arena and library will attract visitors all year round and serve the community now and for years to come."
"It's all coming together! Many people, many hours and much careful consideration have brought us to this moment," said Lincoln Mayor Bill Hodgson. "This multi-use facility makes the best use of our limited space as a thriving permanent small town – a true community legacy."
The Beamsville arena and library complex project has been identified as a priority for federal funding of up to one-third of eligible project costs, to a maximum of $5 million, under the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada Fund. The Town of Lincoln is responsible for the remaining costs of the project. The total project costs are estimated to be $17.5 million.
Federal financial support is conditional on the initiative meeting all applicable federal eligibility requirements under Building Canada and the signing of a contribution agreement with the Town of Lincoln.
The Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan accelerated the existing $33 billion Building Canada Plan and added almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years.
