OTTAWA, ONTARIO, NOVEMBER 19, 2010 - On November 20th of each year, Canadians celebrate National Child Day. This day commemorates Canada's ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) that spells out the basic human rights to which children under the age of 18 are entitled.
"Supporting Canadian families and children is a top priority of the Government of Canada", said Minister Finley. "We have invested in programs and remain committed to supporting Canadians families in the choices they make to care for their children."
Strong families are the cornerstones of our communities, and all children deserve the best start possible in life. The Government of Canada has supported strong families by providing assistance to parents through a variety of supports including the Universal Child Care Benefit, the Child Tax Credit, the Child Care Expense Deduction, and the Canada Child Tax Benefit, which includes the National Child Benefit Supplement.
The Government of Canada values the important contribution that families make to the country's well-being by caring for and raising children and youth.
