Ottawa, November 5, 2010 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing Diwali:
“Namaste.
“Today marks one of the most important Hindu holidays of the year – Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, more commonly known as Diwali. It is an occasion for Hindus, as well as Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, in India and around the world, to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
“Diwali is traditionally observed with the lighting of small oil lamps called 'diyas'. Homes and public places are adorned with these and other lights which symbolize the victory of light over darkness.
“In Canada, Diwali is celebrated as a cultural festival, not only by members of South Asian communities, but by many different faith and cultural communities. By bringing people together in this way, and by spreading a message of peace and friendship, Diwali is truly a celebration that serves to strengthen social cohesion and foster intercultural connections in our country.
“For all Canadians, Diwali provides an excellent opportunity to take part in local festivities such as fireworks displays, and to celebrate with gift-giving and the sharing of traditional sweets. Diwali also serves as a reminder of the tremendous contributions that members of Canada’s South Asian communities have made to this country’s rich and diverse heritage.
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I want to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes for a happy, healthy, bright and colourful Diwali to all those celebrating today and in the days ahead.
“Namaste.”
