Ottawa, Ontario (November 15, 2010) –The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians issued the following statement today on the passing of Noah Augustine, former Chief of the Metepenagiag First Nation.
"I want to express my deep regret at the passing of Noah Augustine, a respected leader who accomplished much in his life and showed great vision for the future. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Noah Augustine, former Chief of the Metepenagiag First Nation."
Noah Augustine served as president of the Union of New Brunswick Indians and co-chair of the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs. During his term as Metepenagiag's chief (2004 to May 2010), the First Nation opened a $7-million park and interpretive centre to showcase the long history of the Mi'qmaq people in the region. He also oversaw a land claim settlement with the federal government. "Noah Augustine will be remembered as a strong voice for his people, and as a tireless leader who could bring communities together to the benefit of all," said Minister Duncan.
Mr. Augustine co-founded an economic development organization, the New Brunswick First Nations and Business Liaison Group, to promote closer economic relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal business people.
