OTTAWA, ONTARIO (November 2, 2010) — The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today issued the following statement:
"Today is another exciting milestone for the Tsawwassen First Nation as it marks the opening of the fall session of the Tsawwassen First Nation legislature. My congratulations go out to the people, the legislators and the government of the Tsawwassen First Nation.
This legislature – the first of its kind under the BC treaty process - provides leadership and a clear vision for building a strong and prosperous future for all Tsawwassen members.
The Tsawwassen treaty is unique and it is the first urban and modern treaty in BC. It has and will continue to support new opportunities throughout the community.
The Tsawwassen Treaty is a clear example that modern treaties create a stable and positive climate for economic investment and development on both First Nation lands and in surrounding communities.
Tsawwassen First Nation is fulfilling the promise of its treaty, and in doing so, demonstrating to other First Nations and all Canadians how much can be accomplished by building on shared interests.
Again, I extend to all Tsawwassen members my congratulations."
