Ref. #2-3447
Ottawa, Ontario (December 13, 2010) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non‑Status Indians, issued the following statement on the re-election of Clément Chartier as President of the Métis National Council (MNC).
"I am pleased to offer my congratulations to President Clément Chartier, on his third term as President of the MNC.
The Government of Canada recognized the importance of the relationship with the Métis National Council (MNC) for Canadians. Two years ago we signed the Métis Nation Protocol and just last December, Parliamentarians unanimously declared 2010 as the Year of the Métis. Now, with 2011 fast approaching, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the MNC to meet our mutual goal of improving the lives of Métis people in Canada and ensuring that Métis continue to participate in economic opportunities offered across the country.
The future is bright for Métis people. Working with the MNC, we continue to make significant progress on the issues that matter. There is greater access than ever before to economic development and training opportunities. Governments across Canada increasingly recognize the importance of Métis issues. Canadians appreciate the contributions that Métis people have made and continue to make to this country.
Looking forward, we are committed to continuing our work with the MNC and Métis associations to address the key priorities set out in the Métis Nation Protocol. We will work together to ensure Métis remain partners in building a strong and prosperous Canada."
