Canada is a country made up of people coming from more than 150 countries around the world. These are Canadians who understand what it means to leave their home and create a new life. Today they enjoy life in safety, security and the rule of law.
The International Organisation for Migration estimates there are currently 214 million refugees in the world. Every day, disasters, economic inequality and political instability are disrupting communities, forcing people to flee their homes. Some face prolonged detention or ill-treatment, and enslaved, rape or even murder. Children, especially those unaccompanied, are particularly at risk.
Canada recognizes that the scale of international migration in the world presents a significant challenge to international development and has long advocated for the protection of refugees. The prevention of human trafficking, especially of women and children, is critical as it victimizes the most vulnerable.
We must work to ensure people have safe access to jobs, healthy lives, and a better quality of life in their home countries.
