OTTAWA, ONTARIO (December 14, 2010) –The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the appointment of Ms. Wendy Whitecloud and Ms. Wanda Wuttunee to the Board of Directors of the First Nations Statistical Institute (FNSI).
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to congratulate Ms. Whitecloud and Ms. Wuttunee on their appointment as Directors to the First Nations Statistical Institute,” said Minister Duncan. “These new members are a great addition to the Board of Directors. Their extensive experience will play an important role in ensuring the success of the Institute.”
The FNSI is one of four institutions created through the First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act, which came into force on April 1, 2006. Working with First Nations and governments, the Institute's role is to increase the accuracy, utility and relevance of First Nations information. As the only First Nations-led federal Crown corporation in Canada, the FNSI marks an important step in government relations with First Nations.
FNSI's Board of Directors is composed of representatives from across Canada, including members of First Nations, who are committed to improving First Nations statistical information and analysis and who have the experience or capacity to enable the Institute to fulfill its mandate. Ms. Whitecloud has been appointed for a duration of two years, while Ms. Wuttunee has been appointed for one year.
