Ref. #2-3438
Ottawa, Ontario (December 1, 2010) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, issued the following statement today:
"I want to take this opportunity to recognize the 5th anniversary of the coming into force of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.
I would like to congratulate the Nunatsiavut Government for achieving this significant milestone and recognize the ongoing efforts of all parties to implement this landmark agreement for the benefit of the Inuit in Labrador.
The Inuit of Labrador can be proud of this historic Agreement and the significant accomplishments made over the past five years in implementing land claims and self-governance in the region. This includes the creation of the Nunatsiavut Government, the five Inuit Community Governments, and the Nunatsiavut Assembly which is comprised of democratically elected representatives from regional constituencies and community level governments.
The Government of Canada will continue to honour its commitments and work with the Nunatsiavut Government to implement this historic Agreement as an essential component to supporting social and economic development.
All Canadians can take pride in the progress made to date to implement the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement."
