Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement regarding recent developments in Côte d’Ivoire:
“On November 28, the people of Côte d’Ivoire voted in presidential elections. I congratulate Alassane Ouattara on his victory in these elections, a victory confirmed by the Independent Electoral Commission, the United Nations and accredited observers.
“Canada urges all parties in the country to respect the democratic will of the Ivorian people and to transition peacefully to the newly elected Government. We are especially concerned by recent reports of violence and curfews imposed on the population.
“The Government of Canada stands firmly with the people of Côte d’Ivoire and supports their desire to achieve a lasting solution to the country’s political crisis. Canada will continue to work closely with the international community to ensure that the democratic will of the Ivorian people is respected.”
