Ottawa – Following the tabling of the Auditor General of Canada's special report on the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner of Canada today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, issued the following statement:
"I would like to thank the Auditor General for her work on this special report on the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner.
When our Government took office, we promised to bring accountability to Ottawa. As part of that plan, we created the Office of the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner of Canada to ensure that public servants can speak out about wrongdoing without fear of reprisals.
A selection process will be launched shortly to identify and appoint a new Public Sector Integrity Commissioner. The appointment of a Commissioner is done after consultation with the leader of every recognized party in the Senate and House of Commons and after approval of the appointment by resolution of the Senate and House of Commons. It is the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates who examines the qualifications and competence of the nominee and reports to the House. This was the process used for the former Commissioner.
I look forward to working with all opposition parties to ensure the right candidate is found.
