The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is providing $108,000 to the Inuit Broadcast Corporation (IBC) for professional and technical support for the development of a new Media Arts Centre in Iqaluit.
Given the size and complexity of the project, CanNor is providing funding to IBC to hire people with the skills and knowledge to develop and construct the Media Arts Centre and assist in the transition from the old facilities to the new one.
The IBC is in the planning stage of creating a much needed new facility that will feature important technological upgrades. These upgrades include high definition production equipment, digital editing systems and video data storage. It will improve the quality of IBC's productions and provide new video service and capacity to artists, clients and viewers in Nunavut.
Finally, it will also house the Inuit Film and Video Archive. This facility will preserve, catalogue, digitalize and store the important collection of historic film and video images captured by Inuit since the 1970s.
CanNor Programs
Funding for this project came from the Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), which provides project-based support to First Nation and Inuit communities that have opportunities for public services in economic development. It is one of a suite of national contribution programs that fall under Aboriginal Economic Development.
