Iqaluit, Nunavut, January 14, 2011 - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, hosted a third national roundtable on occupational health and safety in Iqaluit, Nunavut, with representatives from business, labour, private and not‑for‑profit organizations, and municipal and territorial governments. Discussions included emerging trends and challenges in the workplace, particularly those of concern to northern Canada.
"I would like to thank all the participants for contributing their insight on occupational health and safety in evolving workplaces," said Minister Raitt. "Workers in Canada's northern regions face a number of unique occupational health and safety challenges such as isolated workplaces or workers; cold stress; high workforce mobility; and education and training issues. We are committed to working closely with our partners to better understand Canadian workplace realities and make improvements where needed."
This discussion is part of a series of national roundtables on occupational health and safety in Canada. The purpose of these consultations is to have an open dialogue with stakeholders on how best to create safe and productive workplaces across Canada.
