The Canada Council for the Arts will announce the eight winners of the 2011 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts on Tuesday, February 22 at a news conference at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. Valued at $25,000 each, the awards recognize career achievement in the visual and media arts by Canadian artists, as well as outstanding contributions. The winner of the Saidye Bronfman Award, which recognizes excellence in the fine crafts, will also be announced. The winners will be available for interviews after the news conference.

The celebration of Canada's finest artists continues with a week of events in Ottawa in March and on through June with a special exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) in their honour.
The work of one laureate will be screened at TIFF Bell Lightbox, Reitman Square, 350 King Street West, Toronto, as part of The Free Screen: Avant-Garde Canada - Curating the CFMDC Collection. Please consult the TIFF website for ticket details.
The Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Milliken, will recognize the winners in the House of Commons on Tuesday, March 22 immediately following Question Period.
Members of the media are invited to preview the exhibition organized by the NGC, 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, in celebration of the winners and their works. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present the 2011 awards on Wednesday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Rideau Hall, 1 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. In addition to a $25,000 prize, the winners will each receive, for the first time, a special issue medallion designed by the Canadian Heraldic Authority at the Chancellery of Honours, and produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. The NGC will hold four film screenings during the exhibition run from March 25 to June 19, providing a unique opportunity to view the work of the media arts winners of the 2011 awards. The dates and times are March 26 at 2 p.m., March 31 at 6 p.m., April 16 at 2 p.m., April 20 at 2 p.m., May 19 at 6 p.m. and June 20 at 6 p.m. The film titles will be announced at a later date. Admission to the NGC's Lecture Hall is free.
