The residents of St. Martins and surrounding area received good news today as the federal and provincial governments announced their support for upgrades that will significantly improve the community’s gymnasium. The announcement was made by the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism) and MP for Fundy Royal, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, and Glen Savoie, MLA for Saint John-Fundy.
“As we emerge from the Global recession, our Government recognizes that investments in recreational infrastructure help to build strong, vibrant communities and contribute to economic growth,” said Minister Moore. “Our investment in these important recreational facility upgrades will enrich the quality of life shared by the residents of St. Martins and surrounding areas.”
The project involves the refurbishment of an existing gymnasium at the St. Martin’s Christian Education Community Centre. The announced improvements include the installation of a new floor, enhanced sports equipment, renovations to the washroom and entryway, upgrades to the heating, ventilation and electrical systems. “The Province of New Brunswick is proud to invest in this important recreational infrastructure project,” said Savoie, on behalf of Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud. “Ensuring our regions have recreational infrastructure is important as we encourage our residents to become more physically active.”
“On behalf of the community, I would like to thank both the federal and provincial governments for their contribution to our project,” said Bruce Huttges, Chair and Trustee of the First St. Martins United Baptist Church. “With the refurbishment of this gymnasium, our youth and seniors alike will benefit from a safe and healthy recreational facility for years to come.”
The federal government is investing $26,000 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The provincial government is contributing $50,000 through the Regional Development Corporation; while the Atlantic Baptist Foundation is providing $25,000.
