CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO - The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) (Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario), today announced $4 million in support from the Clean Energy Fund for a cold climate heat pump development and demonstration project by Ecologix Heating Technologies Inc. This funding is part of the Government's actions to improve economic and environmental performance and to support high-quality jobs.
"Investing in these clean energy technologies stimulates the growth of a domestic industry, creating high-quality jobs for Canadians," said Minister Goodyear.
Ecologix and its partners have developed a heat pump system, derived from commercial technology, that is designed to heat homes and work efficiently in most climate regions across Canada. This approach has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tonnes by 2020.
"We are very thankful for the support of the Clean Energy Fund and our contributing partners in making this project a reality," said Stephen Davies, President of Ecologix. "The time is right for a cost-effective alternative to fossil-fuelled space and water heating designed for our Canadian climate."
Since 2006, the Government of Canada has invested more than $10 billion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a more sustainable environment through investments in green infrastructure, energy efficiency, clean energy technologies and the production of cleaner energy and cleaner fuels.
The Government has developed a broad suite of policies and programs to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 - a target aligned with that of the United States.
"Moving forward aggressively with investments in clean energy technologies will help us reach our target and balance our need for energy with our need to protect the environment," said Minister Goodyear.
Today's announcement builds on the success of many initiatives that are helping to sustain and enhance Canada's clean energy industry. Budget 2010: Leading the Way on Jobs and Growth announced an expansion of the eligibility for the accelerated capital cost allowance for equipment that generates or conserves energy by using renewable sources or fuels from waste, or by using fossil fuel efficiently.
