Edmonton, February 24, 2011 — MP Tim Uppal, Member of Parliament for Edmonton—Sherwood Park, today announced financial support for a Black History Month celebration taking place at the Wellington School African Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.
“By funding events like this one, we help showcase the diversity of our country, while promoting settlement and integration efforts,” said MP Uppal on behalf of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.
The Council for the Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta is receiving $7,600 for the event under Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Inter-Action program.
“The Inter-Action funding aims to create opportunities for different cultural and faith communities to build bridges between emerging communities from Africa and mainstream institutions in Edmonton,” said MP Uppal.
This event, taking place February 26 beginning at noon at the Wellington School African Centre in Edmonton, is open to the public. A series of community and government presentations on issues related to settlement, integration and civic participation will be presented. In addition, there will be artistic presentations and children's activities. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
