Eight tourism attractions located in various parts of the Region of Queens are to be upgraded in order to enrich the tourism experience of visitors to the area.
"The economy is our Government's top priority and we recognize that investments in recreational infrastructure help to build strong, vibrant communities and contribute to economic growth," said South Shore-St. Margaret's Member of Parliament Gerald Keddy, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "This project will enhance the tourism experience of visitors to the Region of Queens and increase business opportunities for local entrepreneurs." The eight locations where work will take place include: Centennial Park and Trestle Trail in Liverpool; Tupper Park in Milton; Veteran's Memorial Park in Greenfield; the commercial district in Caledonia; the Port Medway Lighthouse Park; the Fort Point Lighthouse in Liverpool; and the Beach Meadows public beach. The scope of the work will include the addition of benches and picnic tables, parking area improvements, the addition of light standards, new signage and interpretive panels.
"This project is designed to meet all visitors' needs through the region," said John Leefe, Mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality. "It will lead to renewed and rejuvenated facilities at the various sites, increased usage, as well as spin-off opportunities for festivals and other events."
The Government of Canada is investing $90,000 through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund. The Region of Queens Municipality is providing an additional $30,000.
The project was identified as a priority by Team Southwest Nova Scotia, a committee of community and government representatives launched in April 2010 that works with local businesses and communities to identify and develop strategic long-term solutions to help the economy of Southwest Nova Scotia.
