Vancouver, February 18, 2011 — John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, today announced financial support for “Proud of Our History,” as part of the Black History Month celebrations taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia.
“By funding festivals like this one, we help create opportunities for different cultural and faith communities to build bridges,” said Minister Duncan on behalf of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.
The Centre of Integration for African Immigrants is receiving $15,000 for the event under Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Inter-Action program.
“The Government of Canada is delivering significant funds to people from various cultural backgrounds to showcase their diversity and help them to integrate with all Canadians,” added Minister Duncan.
The celebration’s opening ceremonies took place February 5th at 6:00 pm and the closing ceremonies will occur February 27th at 9:00 pm. Activities during the opening ceremony included a documentary on the historic sites and achievements of Black Canadians in the City of Vancouver, whereas the closing ceremonies will include an art and market exhibit during the day followed by an evening of entertainment from a variety of artists, djs, and performers from different ethnic and cultural groups.
