The Federal Government is supporting enhancements to community services in Port Bickerton for both residents and rescue workers alike. The community will soon see the construction of a new community hall and fire rescue centre as a result of an investment made by the Government of Canada.
“With the establishment of this new, integrated community facility, our government is investing in a project that enriches the quality of life shared by residents of Port Bickerton and the surrounding communities,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “The economy is our government’s top priority and our investment in the development of valuable community infrastructure like this centre contributes to the stability of rural Nova Scotian communities like Port Bickerton.”
The new 5000-square-foot energy efficient facility will be home to both the Sea Shore Volunteer Fire Department and the Port Bickerton Community Centre. The building will include a kitchen, storage room, public washrooms, and ample space to host public events and meetings.
In addition to ACOA’s investment of over $199,000, the Province of Nova Scotia has also invested $166,939 in the project through the departments of Health and Wellness and Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. The Municipality of the District of St. Mary's is supporting the project through investment contribution of $20,000.
“We are proud to partner with the dedicated members of the Sea Shore Volunteer Fire Department in this valuable project,” said David Clark, Warden for the District of Saint Mary’s. “This facility will add to the safety and security of our community, and enhance the lives of those who make their homes here.”
“This is the direct result of the hard work and dedicated efforts of the many volunteers and community members who worked to see this project become a reality,” said Keith Horton, President of the Sea Shore Volunteer Fire Department. “This facility will be a great resource for our community, and well-used by all.”
