OTTAWA, ONTARIO, February 24, 2011 - Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, congratulated the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CP) and the National Automobile, Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers Union of Canada (CAW-Canada) for successfully reaching a new collective agreement that will ensure continued service to railway users.
"I applaud CP and the CAW-Canada for reaching a negotiated agreement without interruption to services," said Minister Raitt. "Strong labour-management relations benefit our country's economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians."
The collective agreement, covering nearly 2 200 employees, expired on December 31, 2010. The dispute was settled with the assistance of a mediator from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code. Mediation aims to achieve a collective agreement and avoid a work stoppage.
