Whitehorse (Yukon), March 18, 2011 – Passengers arriving and departing through the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport will soon be welcomed to Yukon by attractive interpretive displays throughout the building, thanks to an investment from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
Senator Daniel Lang, on behalf of the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) today announced funding of $200,000 to enhance the terminal by showcasing Yukon's unique history and culture through local art, photography, and displays.
“Our Government is pleased to invest in this project which will encourage visitors to take full advantage of both the business services and vacation opportunities that this beautiful territory has to offer,” said Senator Lang. “This project will build upon other recently announced investments in overseas and domestic tourism and will promote increased visitor spending and create jobs in Yukon.”
“Yukon's amazing scenery, wildlife, history and welcoming people create a uniquely rich experience for visitors,” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Regional Minister for the North and Minister of Health. “This important initiative will help to build a strong and sustainable tourism sector in the territory.”
Displays, panels and artwork are just some of the concepts that will dovetail with other activities reflective of Yukon lifestyles, culture, heritage, tradition, and history. Embarking and disembarking passengers will be able to learn more about local businesses, arts and culture, festivals and events, museums and the distinct identities of Yukon First Nations.
This project is funded by CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories. SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
